Herbivory and flooding impacts on planted bottomland hardwood seedlings

چکیده

Abstract Bottomland hardwoods forests (BLHW) are increasingly subject to active management for water quality improvement, streambank stabilization, mitigate urban expansion and improve habitat wildlife. Since the majority of remaining BLHW degraded, restoration attempts becoming commonplace within Western Gulf Coastal Plain (WGCP) US. However, success in terms obtaining high stem densities desirable species has been mixed, with managers observing survival rates <15 per cent planted oak hickory seedlings some situations due a variety limitations. Over two growing seasons, we investigated effectiveness portable electric fences, individual tree shelters 2.4-m woven wire fences mitigating herbivory by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) feral swine (Sus scrofa). Treatments fell degraded forested areas abandoned agricultural fields where tested four interest: Nuttall (Quercus texana Buckley), Shumard (Q. shumardii bur macrocarpa Michx.) pecan (Carya illinoinensis K. Koch). Where occurred, mitigation techniques produced higher rate ($\bar{\rm{X}} $ = 17.6 cent) than unprotected 9.1 cent). In density, prominent browsing was evident, resulting two-growing-season height growth being less non-fenced 2.33 cm) 4.33 fenced plots compared 13.02 24.23 cm). Additionally, observed negative relationship between number days that were inundated flood waters during season. Matching interest site conditions, specifically local hydrologic regimes, should carry priority planning project WGCP.

Habitat Relations Effect of Winter Flooding on Mass and Gross Energy of Bottomland Hardwood Acorns

Decomposition of red oak acorns (Quercus spp.; Section Erythrobalanus) could decrease forage biomass and gross energy (GE) available to wintering ducks from acorns. We estimated changes in mass and GE for 3 species of red oak acorns in flooded and non-flooded bottomland hardwood forests in Mississippi during winter 2009–2010. Mass loss of acorns was 8.1% and reduction in GE 0.03 kcal/g after ex...

Survival and Growth of Bottomland Hardwood Seedlings and Natural Woody Invaders near Forest Edges

INTRODUCTION The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV), an area that extends nearly 1,000 km from the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, once supported over 10.1 million ha of wetlands (Hefner and Brown 1985, Keeland and others 1995). Greater than 80 percent of the forested wetlands in the LMAV have been lost, mostly as a result of clearing for agriculture. ...

Mycorrhizae in Bottomland Hardwood (BLH) Wetland Forests

BACKGROUND: Conversion of BLH wetland forests to agriculture is a primary cause of wetland loss in the southeastern United States (Figure 1). Restoration of BLH in abandoned agricultural fields, however, has had limited success. Low survival rates of planted trees are a consequence of several environmental factors such as water stress and herbivory. However, pilot studies of growth of seedlings...

Bottomland Hardwood Afforestation: State of the Art

INTRODUCTION Afforestation activities in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (LMRAV) are currently peaking after the past four decades of extensive deforestation (Allen 1997, King and Keeland 1999, Stanturf and others 1998). Different forces drive the afforestation efforts of public resource agencies, conservation organizations, private corporations, and private landowners. Their intere...

Thinning Guidelines for Southern Bottomland Hardwood Forests

Thinnings, improvement cuttings, and other partial cuttings in southern bottomland hardwood forests are generally designed to enhance the growth and development of those species favored for management objectives. Hardwood tree classes and stocking guides can be used as tools to aid in planning and conducting partial cuttings in hardwood forests. Two disadvantages associated with any partial cut...
